Santiago begins as a film about the failure of a film that was not edited. The images of Santiago were captured in 1992, but as the director was not able to edit them, they remained untouched for over 13 years. In 2005 the director got back to them. He wanted to understand the reason he had failed. Santiago had been a butler at the house he grew up in, a man of great culture and marvelous memory whose character deeply marked the family memories. As he reflects about the time which separates the 92 shooting to the 05/06 edition, the narrator, little by little, gets closer to the film's secret. Santiago is this slow unveiling process, a film about identity, memory and the very nature of documentary film.
